Social Justice

Another arm of NAPVID that is very critical to the consummation of our vision as encapsulated, is the “SOCIAL JUSTICE DEPARTMENT” which was set up to redress the profound social and legal disadvantage of persons with disabilities and promote their participation in the civil, political, economic, social and cultural spheres. The subject of rights is clearly a legal question and a legally proactive team is essential to guarantee the fundamental rights and inherent dignity and worth of members of the physically challenged community. Equity demands that wrongs are to be assuaged and pains of victims of the law are to be mitigated if the cause of justice must be sustained. Currently, petitions that seek to redress legal and administrative prejudices perpetrated against persons with disabilities by government agencies, corporate institutions and individuals, are being forwarded to the Houses of Assembly. In the home front, it is not surprising that some children with disabilities are still denied basic parental love and care. They are relegated in the family and their able bodied siblings are priced over them. They are stigmatized and kept from public view and visitors to their homes. To such parents, the stigma of sending their handicapped child or ward to school is a luxury they cannot contemplate. Their constitutional rights to life and to the dignity of the human person are constantly being disregarded. Such horrendous acts as battery and even murder have in fact been carried out on some of them. While we celebrate those parents who have come out of denial through our campaign, to invest in the inherent potentials of their fortunate children and are now reaping the benefits of their decisions, legal proceedings are being instituted against the unconverted and recalcitrant ones.
