On January 24, 2025, NAPVID’s Executive Director, Melody Omosah Esq., led an inspiring meeting with representatives from GIZ – SKYE, marking a promising step toward enhancing economic empowerment and inclusion for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Edo State. The meeting was attended team members of GIZ SKYE led by Helen Nwoka, the outgoing State Coordinator, and Justina Akinmola, the newly appointed State Coordinator, reflecting both the continuity and the fresh energy of the organization.
During the meeting, Melody expressed his admiration for GIZ’s impactful work in Edo State, particularly their entrepreneurship training initiatives for vulnerable populations and young persons. He reiterated NAPVID’s vision of creating robust pathways through vocational training and skill development programs that empower PWDs to contribute meaningfully to society. Emphasizing that education is the great leveler, he highlighted that collaboration between NAPVID and GIZ could drive initiatives that not only create job opportunities but also break down the attitudinal and environmental barriers hindering full inclusion.
Helen Nwoka praised NAPVID for its excellent work, especially the commendable efforts during the commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). Meanwhile, Justina Akinmola reinforced the importance of removing barriers to inclusion and acknowledged that while there are budget constraints for inclusion initiatives, the commitment to advocating for dedicated resources remains strong. Both parties agreed on the necessity of establishing strategic partnerships, including direct working relationships with key stakeholders with Justina facilitating these linkages to ensure coordinated efforts in future programs.
The meeting set the stage for actionable collaboration, as both NAPVID and GIZ committed to highlighting their core areas of intervention in subsequent interactions. Their shared goal is to develop inclusive vocational training programs and other economic empowerment initiatives that will enable PWDs to acquire skills essential for personal and community development. This promising partnership reflects a collective determination to turn aspirations into realities, fostering an environment where every individual, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to grow.
